For many of us, the chaos and cruelty we see in the news everyday weighs heavy. Democracy, justice, and our planet are under threat and the promise of a bright future can feel like it’s slipping away.
If you are demoralized but determined to not succumb to cynicism, the writers, poets and artists of Refuge invited you into this sanctuary in print.
Refuge is both mirror and medicine—echoing your sense of powerlessness, fury, and anxiety, while gently offering up a sweet, restorative dose of hope.
The voices in Refuge bear witness to it all. Through words and images, they offer perspective, insight, and a kaleidoscope of ways to cope, persevere and imagine a kinder, more sustainable future.

Refuge brings together a powerful, diverse collection of writers and artists each offering a unique perspective on our crumbling world.
Emerging voices stand alongside best-selling authors, award-winning poets, internationally exhibited artists and nationally recognized spiritual leaders. Contributors include:
A richly layered, full-color edition that brings together words and visual art. Designed to be held, revisited, and experienced slowly.
A more accessible edition focused exclusively on the writing. All the same powerful voices, distilled into a format you can carry with you.

Five months after President Trump’s second election, I traveled cross-country to Boston to spend time with old friends. For five days, we sat on couches and around dinner tables, sharing long, honest, sometimes painful conversations about what ails our country and world. We named what felt hard. We dug deep for solutions. We didn’t look away. In the warmth of those conversation I felt buoyed. Steadier. Less alone.
On the flight home to California, looking down on a country shrouded by clouds, an idea took hold.
What if the book was beautifully designed and a piece of art in and of itself?
Thirty thousand feet above all that is unravelling in our country, Refuge was born.
